Selling: Complete These Home Improvement Projects Before Putting Your Home on the Market

by Joan Whitman 10/16/2022

It may seem odd to take on several home improvement projects right before you list your home for sale and move, but it's actually one of the best times to complete them. Minor, budget-friendly home renovations can allow you to sell your home for a higher price and will almost certainly make your home more desirable to the most qualified buyers.

Here are a few home improvement projects that you may want to consider before you put your home on the market:

Update Your Flooring

When you are going to list your home for sale, you need to make it seem as fresh and new as possible. A prospective buyer who is ready to submit a competitive offer is going to need to feel like they can picture themselves in your home, so certain aspects of the home should be updated. Flooring is one of the most important features, as worn carpet or scratched wood floors can be a major turnoff to buyers who aren't going to want to purchase and install new flooring as soon as they get the keys. Fortunately, you can have builder-grade carpet or flooring installed in your home for an affordable price before you put it on the market, allowing your home to sell faster.

Paint Your Home a Neutral Color

In the weeks leading up to when you put your home on the market, purchase some inexpensive neutral paint and cover up old colors. Consider hues such as gray, beige or even white. Neutrals will brighten up your home and make it seem open, spacious and airy. It will also give prospective buyers the impression of a clean slate as they are considering your home.

Upgrade Your Light Fixtures

If the light fixtures in your home are dated, consider installing new ones in a contemporary style before you put your home up for sale. New light fixtures can give your home a consistent, cohesive appearance, and can entice buyers to submit the best possible offer to purchase your home.

You won't need a lot of time or money to complete these projects, yet you will reap all the rewards.
